Resumen
Este artículo examina la evolución histórica de la deuda pública en las principales economías desarrolladas y su papel en la consolidación del Estado moderno. A partir del análisis de episodios de endeudamiento y consolidación, se identifican los factores fiscales, políticos y bélicos que los explican. El texto revisa los debates actuales sobre sostenibilidad, austeridad y las implicaciones institucionales del endeudamiento soberano.
