El turismo en las zonas rurales ha demostrado ser un catalizador importante para el desarrollo económico, ya que en todo el mundo las propiedades rurales diversifican sus actividades. El objetivo del artículo fue analizar la estrategia de diversificar los medios de subsistencia (Ellis, 2000; Padilha, 2009; Padilha et al., 2020) en las propiedades rurales de la ruta de turismo rural Vale del Paraíso (Brasil). Como procedimiento metodológico, se llevó a cabo una investigación cualitativa de casos múltiples en seis empresas, con la aplicación de un cuestionario, registrando y analizando las respuestas utilizando la técnica de análisis de contenido. Como resultado, es evidente que entre las razones para explorar el turismo rural, se centraron en la diversidad de los recursos naturales, la receptividad y la generación de ingresos, con aspectos que facilitan y obstaculizan, así como elementos que modifican el acceso al capital y el desempeño del turismo. En las zonas rurales, el desarrollo de habilidades de comunicación, el intercambio de conocimientos con los turistas, la autoestima, el valor agregado del producto y el aumento de los ingresos familiares son evidentes.
